The top graph is a factory Tikka T3x recoil pad on a 6.5 Creedmoor rifle. The peak recoil is sharp and sudden, followed by an extended level of high pressure.

The Backstop vs Factory Tikka Recoil Pads

Tikka makes incredible rifles that have reviewed very well on the Backfire Youtube channel. However, their recoil pads have some inherent flaws that can make the rifles more difficult to shoot well.

Many of the Tikka T3x models made in the last 10 years have a bottom section of the pad that swoops outward toward the shooter. While this may seem to make sense to "cup" the shooter's shoulder, it dramatically increases muzzle jump by contacting low on the shoulder--far below the bore line.

Furthermore, a curved recoil pad spreads the force of recoil instantly across the shoulder line instead of a gradual build as with the flat face of a recoil pad.
