High rings are recommended but medium can work too. That seems odd to some hunters, so let me explain:
The trend in competitive shooting is high and even extra high rings. The reason being that you don’t have to crane your head over to see through the scope, which is uncomfortable and leads to canting the rifle.
Some hunters still set up rifles with low rings based on legacy issues: (1) old ballistic solvers that didn’t used to solve for height above bore, and (2) older stock designs that didn’t have an adjustable cheek piece.
We built Backlight to be the light hunting chassis that actually promotes accuracy. The above-bore recoil pad reduces or eliminates muzzle jump, and the adjustable cheek piece put the rifle in perfect position. With low rings, too much cheek pressure is applied to get the face down, which can cause misses going high. Plus, you may not clear the handguard fully when zoomed out.
Trust us. High rings. If you’re too used to low rings, medium can be fine, but we think you’ll be most comfortable and accurate with high.
What about extra tall or extra extra tall rings? For us, it becomes a packability problem because the scope gets snagged on things. We like tall, but the cheek piece is long enough for extra tall if it’s your preference. Backlight is built to be very light, folding, and packable, and we don’t want you to lose that.
The carbon fiber handguard is cut far enough away that you'll have no problem fitting even extremely long scopes.
